Immigration Reform Is Vital For The U.S. Economy

Immigration reform is vital to steer the U.S. economy towards recover. As most illegal immigrants living inside the U.S., are undocumented and therefore part of the underground economy, their income and resources too often go unreported and unaccounted for.

No matter on what side of the immigration debate you are on, it is agreeable that having such a large population of undocumented and therefore untraceable individuals residing in the U.S. is disadvantageous for all citizens. Most illegal immigrants are tremendously productive parts of our society, and are eager to contribute to the U.S. economy. Therefore they should be given a chance and path towards a legal status. Illegal immigrants are already residing in the U.S. in millions, and it is very unlikely that government actions will be taken to massively deport all of these individuals. Therefore, we feel that urgent action is needed to deal with this illegal immigration, as it should be a vital and integral part of any economic recovery plan.

ABS analysis indicates that if mass legalization should take place of illegal immigrants who have clear criminal records, it would be huge milestone towards U.S. economic recovery. This action would stimulate demand in the sectors that are the hardest hit by the economic downturn such as housing, automotive and travel. Suddenly there would be millions of new consumers for housing, cars, travel and etc. who are eager but unable to make these purchases. Therefore, immigration reform would significantly increase consumer demand.

Besides the rise in consumer demand, immigration reform would increase tax receipts for local, state and federal government as well, and level the playing field for legal citizens in many industries such as construction, leisure, and etc.

ABS only analyzed the financial impact of Immigration Reform, without even looking at the humanitarian aspects of it. There are so many sad cases of humanitarian suffering that many immigrants are exposed to due to their illegal status in the U.S., and therefore urgent action is needed to help these individuals.

As the economic crises is deteriorating and worsening economic indicators are being reported daily, resistance to globalization is rising. Most large corporations agree, that globalization has allowed them to position themselves better strategically and introduce their products and services to a wider range of consumers worldwide. Is the working class of the western world sharing the same opinions?

Resistance to globalization has been significantly rising from workers, especially from the western world, who are now not only competing with other workers across the city or state, but across the world. Sentiment is starting to shift in where more and more workers are feeling that globalization is not improving their daily living conditions, rather globalization is stagnating it. As the workers in the western world have to deal with cheap labor from the developing world, sentiment to globalization is deteriorating. In some countries of the world politicians have started calling for new measures to be enacted, that encourages consumers to purchase domestic products. Will these actions cause protectionism to rise again?

Good or bad? The stimulus package has now been passed by Congress and is awaiting the signature of the president. During the last several weeks, there has been much debate whether this is a good or bad idea. There are individuals with rightful claims on both sides to why their opinion is correct. Looking at the current facts and the economic condition, we all know that something needs to be done to get the economy moving again. The private sector is unable to do it on its own and therefore government action is warranted. The question that arises is, should this action be through tax cuts for businesses or infrastructure building and tax rebate checks mailed to citizens?

In the current turbulent economic times there are ways to generate savings for small businesses and non-profit organizations, other than cutting payroll.

Here are some innovate ways to accomplish this:

Review your current utilities such as Phone, Electricity, Internet and Gas and look for savings opportunities. As an example, consider that many professional business and non-profit organization rely on dedicated internet connections which can cost as much as $400-$600 per month, when the same connections might be available through your current Cable or Phone provider for $100 per month. Also, consider developing strategies to preserve energy. By doing so not only will it save your organization money, but it will aid the environment as well. Phone costs can also be significantly cut by switching to VOIP phone service providers, which provide the same reliability, sometimes at deep discounts.
Look for wasteful spending. For many larger organizations bad business rules can significantly increase wasteful spending. Consider reviewing all of your current expenditures one by one and developing innovate ways to save. Some examples of such are the implementing information system flows to audit your current expenditures bet
Utilize the tools and staff that you have within your organization. If you are planning on purchasing a simple web page, developing a basic database system or etc., stop and look internally to see if any of your internal staff is able to accomplish something that may suite your needs, without having to go out and make the purchase.
Planning on purchasing new equipment. Look for strategies that can refurbish your existing equipment or resell your existing equipment before purchasing.
Are you processing credit cards at your business? Contact some other Merchant Service providers and see if they are able to offer you a better deal based on your last several statements. Savings can range from 5-10% or more per month.

These are just some of the suggestions about ways to maximize your operations efficiencies and save money. Too often companies resort to cutting payrolls as the first alternative to developing savings. This can be very bad for morale and has the potential to decrease productivity. Always consider at looking for alternative ways to save before resorting to payroll cuts.

U.S. Economic Policy – A light at the end of the tunnel.

As citizens and employees we may disagree with the massive layoffs and restructuring that is going on at so many companies. Every day it seems that we are hearing of new layoffs not only in the news, but from friends and family as well. As employees and citizens this creates a devastating situation for consumer optimism and confidence which is brought to extreme lows. It makes sense that if we as consumers, are scared that we will lose our income or it will be significantly decreased, we are going to spend less. The picture in the short term seems to be very gloomy.

However, businesses and non-profits with favorable regulation to cut costs quickly will develop a better competitive advantage against their global competitors. So many of the developing countries and the developed world make it much more difficult for companies to cut costs by slashing payrolls, and hence their competitive advantage will decrease. Also, many of these nations have been resilient to develop large spending plans to boost the economy. The new stimulus package that is most likely going to be passed by the U.S. Congress will make up for the massive job losses in the private sector through job creating initiatives, while in the meantime allowing businesses to restructure and gain their competitive advantage.

The U.S. seems to be positioned the best to come out on top of this crises as a leader and reboot global demand.

Is the stimulus package a good or bad idea for U.S. business?

Our organization believes that many of the programs included in the stimulus package represent good development programs for U.S. businesses and non-profits. One specific fact that we like is the development of broadband lines and the computerization of healthcare data. Not only will this develop new high paying jobs, but it will lower costs and make U.S. businesses and non-profits more competitive. Currently many businesses do not qualify for cable broadband and are unable to afford to have dedicated T1 or T3 lines installed due to their high cost. Dedicated T1 and T3 lines can cost between $400-$600 per month which is simply too much for a small business to pay.

We believe, that developing our broadband network will improve the U.S. overall competitiveness and lower small business and non-profit costs. This is a great investment for the future. Some of the criticism of the stimulus package are warranted as well as some of those programs are not very stimulative and are a true waste of money. As it is normal with politicians they will always try to push their limits and include certain projects that might be worthy but should not be included to further drown the U.S. population into debt.
